HS2 Academy’s exclusive initiative to provide live online University of California, Riverside programs to our students to earn important certificates. In addition to gaining highly demanded skills for future jobs, participating students will also maximize their short spring break to boost their college applications.

UCR will provide the online lectures, assignments, and all related evaluations of the students. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to get UCR official certificates.

This program is designed for current middle and high school students, 8th graders to 12 graders.

Course Title: Fundamentals of Internet of Things (IoT) Security

Course Dates: April 1 to April 4 5pm to 7pm PST, 8 hours

Tuition: $880 + Registration fee $100

Course Description:

In an interconnected world, ensuring the security of Internet of Things (IoT) devices and systems is paramount. This course aims to provide high school students with a foundational understanding of IoT security principles, vulnerabilities, and best practices. Through interactive lectures, hands-on activities, and discussions, students will explore the importance of IoT security and develop essential skills to protect IoT devices and networks from potential threats.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understand the basic principles and concepts of Internet of Things (IoT) security.

2. Identify common security vulnerabilities in IoT devices and networks.

3. Learn about encryption, authentication, and access control mechanisms used to secure IoT systems.

4. Gain hands-on experience in implementing basic security measures for IoT devices.

5. Develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to analyze and mitigate IoT security risks.

Course Outline:

Session 1: Introduction to IoT Security (2 hours)

- Overview of IoT security: Definition, importance, and challenges

- Discussion on the impact of IoT security breaches

- Introduction to the CIA triad (Confidentiality, Integrity, Availability) in IoT security

Session 2: Common IoT Security Threats and Vulnerabilities (1 hour)

- Overview of common security threats targeting IoT devices and networks

- Discussion on vulnerabilities such as insecure communication, weak authentication, and lack of firmware updates

- Case studies of real-world IoT security breaches

Session 3: Encryption and Authentication in IoT (1 hour)

- Introduction to encryption techniques used to secure IoT communication (e.g., SSL/TLS)

- Overview of authentication methods for IoT devices and users

Session 4: Access Control and Authorization in IoT (1 hour)

- Explanation of access control mechanisms in IoT systems

- Introduction to role-based access control (RBAC) and privilege escalation

Session 5: Securing IoT Devices and Networks (2 hours)
